Kailua-Kona, a community established by King Kamehameha, was the first capital of the newly unified Kingdom of Hawaii. Royal fishponds, now preserved at Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park, were the hub of unified Hawaiian culture. Kailua-Kona has evolved in the late 20th century from a small fishing village to the center of commerce and tourism on West Hawaii.
