Kalapana is the area of the Big Island of Hawaii, which has been most affected by volcanoes. Most of the town of Kalapana was destroyed by lava flows in 1986. Yet, in Kalapana, houses are still built on lava flows only a couple of year old. The lava flow also re-arranged the coastline, with Kaimu Beach being the newest beach on the island.
