Mauna Kea, culminating at 4,205 m (13,796 ft) is the highest point in Hawaii. The summit of Mauna Kea is often covered by snow in the winter. Thanks to its high elevation, dry air, and dark skies, Mauna Kea has become the largest scientific observatory site in the world, home to thirteen telescopes from eleven countries. The access road has an unpaved and steep section requiring a four-wheel drive vehicle.
