The city of Berkeley, extending from a marina over the Bay to Tilden Regional Park in the hills, is the site of the flagship campus of the University of California. The public campus, founded in 1868, is one of the most prestigious research universities in the world. Both city and university have long been famed as a center of activist politics and radical social ideas. The Free Speech Movement began on the Berkeley campus, and many student demonstrations against the Vietnam War occurred there in the 1960. Hippie culture flourished there, and its influence can still be seen on Telegraph Avenue, the city's most lively street, and People's Park. One area of Berkeley, known as the Gourmet Ghetto, recently became re-known as a place to have good food.
