Hanauma Bay (which means "curved bay") is a flooded crater, giving it a remarkable curvature. Its oceanside rim's ash was carried away by tidal currents and trade winds, and eventually opened to the sea as the result of wave erosion. Hanauma Bay's turquoise and sapphire waters are well sheltered from waves, and feature reefs close to shore. Since Hanauma bay is a marine conservation area, the fish are protected and abundant. Combine all of that with a beautiful and well equipped beach, and you get an excellent and very popular snorkeling area.
