Slab City is an abandonned Navy base that has become an alternative living community. During the winter, thousand campers live in the uncontrolled, off-the-grid area of the desert which has been refered to as "the last free place on earth". Many of the Slab City residents are free spirits who have created artwork out of discarded materials, the most notable of them found in the East Jesus sculpture garden.
