Mojave Trails National Monument, protecting a vast 1.6 million acres, is the connective tissue linking Mojave National Preserve to Joshua Tree National Park. Mojave Trails National Monument's natural highlights include Amboy Crater, one of North America's youngest volcanoes, the Cadiz Dunes, one of the most pristine dune field in the country, Afton Canyon, one of the rare places where the Mojave River flows above ground, Southern California's largest number of lava tubes at Pisgah, and California's densest population of Bigelow Cholla Cactus. Mojave Trails National Monument also preserves the longest undevelopped stretch of historic route 66.
