The Presidio of Santa Barbara (1782) was the last military outpost built by Spain in the New World. Shortly after, "The Queen of the Missions," mission Santa Barbara (1786) was founded, and the city built up near it. Many of Santa Barbara's buildings have a Spanish architecture with white walls and distinctive red tile roofs. Thanks to its beauty, beaches, and mediterranean climate, Santa Barbara is nowadays an upscale city and popular tourist destination.
